Raya and the Last Dragon, The Mitchells vs the Machines: Reviews

I’m not mad at girl protagonists, especially those who aren’t European princesses. Sure, Raya is a princess, but she is a warrior princess.

Raya and the Last Dragon

Watched this one back in July so I don’t remember it as well. My notes are “I didn’t want to watch this movie, but it was so good. Surprisingly good.” I got sucked into it and thoroughly enjoyed it. (It should be noted that I often don’t want to watch a particular movie. Pretty sure it’s because I’m an Aquarius, so don’t tell me what to do.)

I like Awkwafina as a performer. She was great here, in Shang Chi, and I especially loved her in The Farewell. Man, that movie was good. Of course, I also like Kelly Marie Tran, Daniel Dae Kim, Benedict Wong and Sandra Oh. There’s no shortage of talent here. You even get Alan Tudyk doing his thing.

This movie is for people who

  • are looking for an adventure story with dragons

This movie isn’t for people who

  • don’t like dragons?

The Mitchells vs the Machines

Wow was this movie fun. Katie just wants to go to college to be a filmmaker. Her dad doesn’t get her. People hurt each other. A road trip helps the whole family to eventually heal. Oh, and there are robots trying to take over the world.

My only quibble with this movie is that the Mitchells ever think they are somehow lesser because they are weird and don’t take perfect pictures. Dude. Happiness is being in touch with your inner geek. Mad respect for everyone’s having a screwdriver and for the kid who knows the proper migration patterns of the triceratops, the first grade teacher who can handle anything and the teen girl who’s looking for her people.

Bonus: I get the voice talents of both Maya Rudolph and Olivia Colman.

This movie is for people who

  • have a quirky wonderful family

  • like to laugh

  • love pugs

  • are pretty sure the world is going to end when the machines take over

This movie isn’t for people who

  • like things Instagram perfect

  • want a serious movie

  • love Siri and Alexa and believe in them wholeheartedly

#MondayMovies disclaimer: This blog is just for my thoughts. Sure, I’m a writer and an English major so I have some idea—we would hope—of how stories work. I’m also a flawed human being with my owns likes and dislikes, though, so please watch any movie you like and love it or hate it or just go for the popcorn. (Also, there will likely be a post a day leading up to the Oscars because I have quite a few films left)
